Understanding trauma, the body, and the process of healing through a Christ-led, whole-person approach.
March 18, 2022…
God met me at the lowest point of my life.
Not the “I’m having a rough week” kind of low…
I’m talking about:
no job
no car
facing eviction
emotionally and physically drained
Everything around me was unstable.
But what I didn’t have language for back then was this:
My body was overwhelmed.
Not just my situation…
my nervous system.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
The Breaking Point — What Trauma Really Is
At the time, I thought I was just going through a hard season.
But looking back, I can see it clearly:
I wasn’t just struggling… I was in survival mode.
And here’s what I need you to understand:
Trauma isn’t just what happened to you.
It’s what your body had to carry because of what happened.
My thoughts were racing.
My emotions were unpredictable.
My body didn’t feel safe… even when nothing was happening.
“Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” — Proverbs 4:23
The Encounter — When I Called on Jesus
In that place…
I cried out to Jesus.
Not polished.
Not rehearsed.
Not religious.
Just real.
And something shifted.
There was a moment—one I’ll never forget—where everything in me surrendered.
Even in the middle of confusion…
God met me.
“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” — Romans 10:13
The Revelation — What I Thought Was Spiritual… Was Also Wounds
At first, I thought everything I was experiencing was just spiritual warfare.
But God began to show me something deeper:
Not everything is just spiritual… some of it is unhealed wounds, patterns, and survival responses.
That truth changed everything.
Let’s Talk This Through Clearly
Adults with unhealed trauma don’t process information as adults in those moments.
They react from:
- the 7-year-old who felt unheard
- the 10-year-old who felt unsafe
- the 12-year-old who had to grow up too fast
So if you only teach at an “adult intellectual level,”
you’ll inform them… but you won’t reach them.
What Was Actually Happening
I wasn’t “too emotional.”
I wasn’t “losing it.”
My body was responding from memory.
Because trauma isn’t just stored in your mind…
it’s stored in your body.
“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.” — 2 Timothy 1:7
“…the peace of God… will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6–7
The Process — Healing in Real Time
Healing didn’t happen overnight.
It looked like:
sleepless nights
crying without explanation
learning how to regulate instead of react
sitting with emotions instead of running from them
facing patterns I didn’t want to admit were mine
reparenting myself in truth
And this is where everything began to shift:
I stopped only praying for breakthrough… and started participating in my healing.
Bridging the Spiritual & the Natural
Healing wasn’t just:
“pray more”
And it also wasn’t just:
“do the inner work”
It was both.
God revealed.
I responded.
My mind renewed.
My body relearned safety.
That’s discipleship.
“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind…” — Romans 12:2
Emergency Contacts — Who God Is in Your Healing
When your body doesn’t feel safe…
you don’t just need coping skills.
You need revelation of who God is.
Call on Him as:
YHWH Rapha — The Lord Who Heals
(Exodus 15:26)
He heals beyond symptoms… to the root.
YHWH Shalom — The Lord Is Peace
(Judges 6:24)
Peace is not the absence of chaos… it’s His presence in it.
YHWH Rohi — The Lord My Shepherd
(Psalm 23:1)
He leads, corrects, protects, and sustains.
YHWH Shammah — The Lord Is There
(Ezekiel 48:35)
Even in trauma… you were not alone.
Abba — Father
(Romans 8:15)
Not distant… relational and close.
This is your emergency contact. Anytime. Anywhere. He is there.
Forgiveness Framework — Releasing What Trauma Attached You To
Forgiveness isn’t just words.
It’s a process.
1. Awareness
What am I feeling?
What am I still carrying?
2. Root Identification
Where did this start?
What moment shaped this response?
3. Reframing
What is actually true now?
What did I believe that isn’t truth?
4. Identity Anchoring
Who am I now… outside of what happened?
“If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…” — 2 Corinthians 5:17
The Truth About Forgiveness
Forgiveness without identity reclamation still leaves you empty.
Because if you release the offense…
but don’t reclaim who you are…
You’re still operating from what was taken.
Forgiveness is not just:
“I forgive them.”
It is:
“I release what happened… and I reclaim who I am.”
That’s how you break:
- resentment
- emotional ties
- identity distortion
The Transformation — Honesty Before Healing
I had to be honest with myself.
I was over-spiritualizing some things
and avoiding responsibility in others.
And God, in His love, corrected me.
Not to shame me…
but to reshape me.
Identity Shift
I am a disciple.
Not because I know everything—
but because I respond.
Bring It Home
You are not broken.
Your body may have just learned how to survive
in environments that didn’t feel safe.
But:
What was learned can be unlearned. What was wired in survival can be rewired in safety.
Reflect
When you react…
Is it you now responding?
Or a younger version of you trying to stay safe?
