Discipleship Formation
Most people assume that if growth feels difficult, something must be wrong.
But what if difficulty isn’t evidence that you’re off track?
What if it’s evidence that transformation is occurring?
Like a seed breaking open beneath the soil, it is not collapsing—it is becoming.
Like a butterfly pressing against the narrow edge of its becoming, it is not trapped—it is being formed.
Like a child learning to walk, it is not failing—it is developing strength in the attempt.
Humans experience growth as pressure, resistance, strain, discomfort, uncertainty, and tension.
The question is:
What if the very thing you’re trying to escape is the very thing producing growth?
- What if the resistance you’re feeling is evidence that change is taking place?
- What if the friction is revealing areas that still need development?
- What if the strain is expanding your capacity?
- What if the pressure is preparing you for what comes next?
- What if the uncertainty is inviting you to trust God more deeply?
Scripture repeatedly shows us that God often forms people before He advances them.
Israel wandered before they learned trust.
David was hidden before he was crowned.
Joseph was tested before he was elevated.
Jesus was tempted before He ministered.
Growth is rarely comfortable.
Formation often feels like disruption while it is happening.
So instead of asking:
“Why is this so hard?”
Consider asking:
“What is this forming in me?”
Because what feels like delay may actually be depth.
What feels like loss may actually be pruning.
What feels like pressure may actually be preparation.
And what feels hard today may simply be what growth feels like before it becomes visible.
Reflection Question
What discomfort in your life might actually be evidence of growth rather than evidence that something has gone wrong?
