Sin is not just behavior—it’s a root system producing patterns in your life.

For the Lord disciplines and corrects those whom He loves, And He punishes every son whom He receives and welcomes [to His heart].  Hebrews 12:6

We’ve been taught to fight what we do…

but God is after who we believe we are.

Before there is a message, there is a forming.

Before anything shows up externally, something has already been established internally.

God doesn’t start with behavior.

He starts with identity.

Because identity shapes character…

and character produces behavior.

So what we call “sin” is often just the visible fruit of something deeper.

But here’s where we need to go further…

The 7 deadly sins are not just behaviors.

They are root systems.

And from each root…

entire branches of patterns grow.

Sin Is Not Just Fruit — It’s Also Root

Most people have been taught to see sin like this:

“I struggle with anger”

“I struggle with overeating”

“I struggle with comparison”

But those are not just isolated struggles.

They are branches connected to something deeper.

Because sin doesn’t just show up…

it grows.

And the 7 deadly sins represent core root systems that produce multiple expressions.

Understanding Root → Branch → Fruit

 Visualizing the Pattern

This is what it looks like:

Every pattern you struggle with can be traced through this model.

What shows up in your life (fruit) didn’t start there.

It developed through patterns (trunk)…

that were formed from something deeper (root).

So if we only address what we see…

we miss what’s actually driving it.

Every pattern follows a structure:

Root (Sin Nature / Core Issue)

→ Branches (Behavior Patterns / Expressions)

→ Fruit (Outcomes / Consequences)

So instead of asking:

“What am I doing wrong?”

We begin asking:

“What root is producing this pattern?”

I didn’t always see it this way.

I used to think I just needed more discipline…

more control… more effort.

But I kept running into the same patterns.

And that’s when I realized—

I wasn’t dealing with behavior…

I was dealing with roots.

Awareness is powerful… but transformation happens through application.

The 7 Deadly Sins as Root Systems

Now let’s go deeper.

Each “deadly sin” is not just one behavior…

it is a root that produces many branches.

1. Gluttony — The Root of Over consumption

Gluttony is not just about food.

It is the root of overconsumption in all forms.

Branches:

• Emotional eating

• Overspending

• Addiction

• Constant need for stimulation

• Overindulgence in social media, validation, attention

Deeper Root:

• Emptiness

• Lack of comfort

• Emotional deprivation

What it’s saying:

“I don’t feel full… so I keep taking in more.”

2. Greed — The Root of Fear of Lack

Greed isn’t just about money.

It’s about a fear that there will never be enough.

Branches:

• Hoarding

• Overworking

• Inability to rest

• Control issues

• Financial anxiety

Deeper Root:

• Scarcity

• Instability

• Fear of loss

What it’s saying:

“If I don’t secure everything, I’ll lose everything.”

 3. Wrath — The Root of Mismanaged Pain

Wrath is not just anger.

It is pain that has not been processed properly.

Branches:

• Explosive reactions

• Irritability

• Bitterness

• Passive aggression

• Control through intimidation

Deeper Root:

• Hurt

• Powerlessness

• Injustice

What it’s saying:

“This is the only way I can protect myself.”

 4. Pride — The Root of Self-Protection

Pride is not just arrogance.

It is protection against being seen as less than.

Branches:

• Defensiveness

• Inability to receive correction

• Independence to a fault

• Comparison (feeling above or below)

Deeper Root:

• Shame

• Insecurity

• Fear of exposure

What it’s saying:

“I have to elevate myself to stay safe.”

5. Envy — The Root of Identity Confusion

Envy is not just jealousy.

It is disconnection from your own identity.

Branches:

• Comparison

• Resentment

• Competition

• Insecurity

Deeper Root:

• Feeling unseen

• Lack of identity

• Internal inadequacy

What it’s saying:

“What they have should’ve been mine.”

6. Sloth — The Root of Disengagement

Sloth is not just laziness.

It is disconnection from purpose and effort.

Branches:

• Procrastination

• Avoidance

• Numbing out

• Lack of follow-through

Deeper Root:

• Fear of failure

• Burnout

• Hopelessness

What it’s saying:

“Why try? It won’t change anything.”

7. Lust — The Root of Misplaced Desire

Lust is not just sexual sin.

It is misdirected desire for connection and fulfillment.

Branches:

• Oversexualization

• Fantasy escape

• Emotional dependency

• Objectifying others

Deeper Root:

• Need for intimacy

• Loneliness

• Emotional void

What it’s saying:

“This is the closest thing to connection I can find.”

Bringing It Back to the Heart

Scripture tells us:

“Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” — Matthew 12:34

But it doesn’t stop at speaking.

Out of the abundance of the heart…

• you consume

• you react

• you compare

• you withdraw

• you strive

The heart is the source.

 Why Behavior Change Alone Fails

We’ve been taught to cut off branches…

But if the root is still alive,

the branches will grow back.

You cannot cast out a behavior

that is rooted in an identity you still believe.

That’s why external correction leads to performance…

but internal transformation leads to freedom.

Healing is not just about stopping sin.

 The Real Work: Uprooting

It’s about asking:

• What is this trying to soothe?

• What is this protecting?

• What am I believing right now?

Because when the root is healed…

the branches lose their power.

In Totality …

God is not just removing sin.

He is restoring identity.

And when identity is restored…

behavior doesn’t have to be forced.

It changes naturally.

Most of us have heard these words before…

but we were never taught what they actually mean.

So we dismiss them…

or we don’t recognize them in our everyday lives.

But once you understand the root behind them—

you start to see yourself clearly.

Root Check:

  • What pattern keeps showing up in my life?
  • What might be the root behind it?
  • What am I trying to soothe, protect, or replace?

    Smooth read!
I particularly enjoyed direct identification of the overall issues, with a swift internal breakdown of how to examine one’s self on the road to redemption!

    1. Thank you 🙂 I am blessed that you were able to identify and apply within the context.
Thank you for sharing and I love you 🤍

  2. This was such a good reminder that the renewal of our mind and heart changes everything. It was a little concerning that I pretty much committed every single deadly sin multiple times so this was a big wake up call. Thank you Denise!

    1. Thank you for sharing that 🤍

And give yourself grace—this isn’t about shame, it’s about awareness.

God reveals things so we can be restored, not condemned.

You’re already in the process of renewal 🙏🏽
