When Life Doesn’t Match the Promise
This message was written… but also spoken ↓
A lot of us are facing food insecurity, housing instability, lack of employment, or not enough income, and I want to let you know we are not alone.
We serve a living God, and many of us have drifted in the wait because our circumstances have shown adversity. Our lives haven’t aligned to what we think it should look like.
A Savior Who Didn’t Skip the Struggle
Neither did Jesus’ life.
He was born into a family who was impoverished.
He was born in a manager; a trough used for feeding animals.
He was a carpenter.
He even served His last three years of ministry in the wilderness—day by day trusting in the SOURCE for His daily needs.
When He preached the Gospel, this very world we live in couldn’t accept Him because He hung with women, tax collectors, fishermen, and those who were insignificant in the eyes of those who had manipulated and used God’s importance for their own benefit and status.
Wealth That Had Nothing to Do With Possessions
Jesus’ status was one of humility and humanity.
He came into this world poor in things but rich in spirit. He yielded to His assignment here on earth knowing God would provide.
A Pattern God Has Never Broken
We can trace God’s hand all throughout the Bible—
From the children of Israel receiving fire by night and a cloud by day,
the three Hebrew boys placed in the furnace and not burned,
Daniel placed in the lions’ den and not eaten,
Esther saving a nation because of obedience,
Noah saving his family of eight because he built a boat,
an eight-year-old king—Josiah—born into a family that served other gods, stepping up and tearing down the idols of his forefathers to uplift the true God.
And let’s not forget the many miracles Jesus did on this very earth.
He multiplied two fish and five loaves of bread to feed thousands He taught.
Or what about the man at the Pool of Bethesda who had been waiting for the water to stir once a year—healed instantly by Christ Himself?
The Same God, Right Now
These miracles are still relevant to us today.
God is no respecter of persons.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, and whoever believed in Him shall be saved.
That’s the power of the God of the universe—the Creator of Heaven and Earth, the One who breathes breath into our bodies every day, the One who sees all things.
The Question We All Eventually Face
How do we fix the issues that feel so insurmountable in our lives?
Returning to Dependence
Trust God.
Go to Him like a child and ask for forgiveness.
Forgiveness for what?
For believing we could do life without the Life Giver.
For believing that the life we have is because of us.
For believing that He was some myth we only entertained on Sunday.
For hurting His feelings by ignoring Him every time He tried to get our attention to make Himself known—but because He didn’t look like what we wanted, we rejected Him.
Order Before Addition
Seek the Kingdom and all its righteousness, and everything else will be added unto you.
What’s everything else?
The very things we so anxiously worry about:
food, clothes, housing, transportation, employment, our health, our families’ well-being, and the many things that flow from daily life.
Peace Is a Result, Not a Reward
Nobody can do it better than the One who created the very earth we live in.
Which is why He tells us:
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” — Philippians 4:6–7
An Invitation, Not an Obligation
Will you give God the opportunity to dwell with you as you abide in Him?
Seeing Jesus Clearly
There is a show called The Chosen that beautifully captures the heart of Christ, and it has helped me understand how much God loves me and gives me a sense of realism of Jesus’ character and the way He desires us to be.
You can download the free app on the Google Play Store and Apple Store.
It’s truly a blessing, and I pray it will be unto you as well.
A Posture That Changes Everything
“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God [set aside self-righteous pride], so that He may exalt you [to a place of honor in His service] at the appropriate time, casting all your cares [all your anxieties, all your worries, and all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares about you [with deepest affection, and watches over you very carefully].” — 1 Peter 5:6–7
Your Next Step
If this spoke to you, don’t rush past it.
Pause. Pray. Sit with God.
Invite Him into the places you’ve been carrying alone—the worry, the lack, the waiting, the fear.
And if you’re ready to learn how to walk with God relationally, not religiously—how to understand His ways, His processes, and your identity in Him—visit the Spiritual Resources page.
You don’t have to do this life without the Life Giver.
Shalom Shalom!
